The National Institute of Homoeopathy is an autonomous organization under the Ministry Of Health And Family Welfare. It was founded on 10th December 1975 in Kolkata and is now under the Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India. The institute was affiliated to the University of Calcutta till 2003-04 and has been affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences since the session of 2004-05, and conducts degree courses in Homoeopathy. Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery is one of the degree courses offered by this Institution. This course has been offered since 1987 and the duration of the same is five and a half years, including one year of internship. The institute has been offering its postgraduate course, i.e. Doctor of Medicine in Homoeopathy since 1998 and is offered in six disciplines: Practice of Medicine, Homoeopathic Pharmacy, Organon of Medicine, Repertory, Materia Medica, and Pediatrics. There is an availability of six seats in each subject. Moreover, the NIH also conducts Orientation Training courses for physicians and teachers regularly.
The NIH has In-patient and Out-patient departments that provide subsidized and sometimes free medical services to the patients. Also, there are special facilities available at the NIH, such as specialized clinics with radiology, ultrasonography, clinical pathology, and ECG. The NIH is a hospital encompassing 60 beds. Out of those, 10 beds are allocated for surgery and 10 beds are for maternity cases. The hospital conducts Orthopedia surgery and also specializes in antenatal and post-natal care of the mother and the child. Additionally, the NIH has eight air-conditioned pay cabins, along with a well-equipped operation theatre. Also, the hospital has introduced a six-bed pediatric ward recently. A lot of new instruments and equipment have been added such as portable X-ray, pulse oxymeter, diathermy, O.T. lamp, and a Horizontal sterilizer.
