Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM): Steering a Centuries-old Tradition along Modern Pathways

Part II : The birth and growth of CCRUM

In post-independence India, a number of committees appointed by the Government strongly recommended research and development in the Indian Systems of Medicine, including the Unani System. The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) was established in 1978 by the Central Government as a natural consequence of such recommendations.

Imparting Momentum to Scientific Research in Unani Medicine
CCRUM started functioning from 10 January 1979 with the aim of building a research base for the system together with focused objectives and plans for its development and modernisation. It is structured as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, with qualified manpower and adequate financial resources. It takes up nationally relevant research activities in Unani Medicine, based on modern protocols. Over the years, it has contributed significantly to enhancing and evolving this traditional system of medicine along modern lines, while retaining its authenticity, distinct character and effectiveness. As an apex research organization, the Council has the mandate to aid, establish and co-ordinate scientific researches in Unani medicine.

Main Objectives of CCRUM
• To undertake research and collaborative research projects in Unani Medicine.
• To initiate, aid, develop and coordinate scientific research on different aspects of Unani Medicine.
• To promote and assist institutions of research for the study of diseases, their prevention, causation and remedy.
• To exchange information with other institutions, associations and societies interested in the objectives similar to those of the Council, especially in the observation and study of diseases.
• To prepare, print, publish and display any posters, papers, pamphlets, periodicals and books for maintenance of the objectives of the Council and to contribute to such literature.

The Council today has a dedicated team of scientists, doctors and technical personnel with an overall strength of around 800, working in 23 centres across India. Headed by Director
General Prof. Asim Ali Khan, CCRUM has evolved into a 21st century organisation, and is today assisting the Government in addressing some of the public health challenges of India.
“It is our endeavour at Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine to conduct scientific research on the applied as well as fundamental aspects of Unani system of medicine”, says Prof. Khan. “Over the past four decades of its existence, the Council has made significant strides in Clinical Research. CCRUM, with its network of 23 peripheral institutes spread across the country is catering to the health needs of masses”.
CCRUM has established an active countrywide presence through its peripheral centres. Notable among the peripheral centres are the two Central Research Institutes of Unani Medicine – at Hyderabad and Lucknow respectively. The Council has eight Regional Research Institutes of Unani Medicine – one each at Chennai, Bhadrak, Patna, Kolkata, Aligarh, New Delhi, Srinagar and Mumbai. The Hakim Ajmal Khan Institute for Literary and Historical Research in Unani Medicine at New Delhi is other significant unit. The Drug Standardization Research Institute at Ghaziabad performs specialized research in its domain. The other units of CCRUM are: two Regional Research Centres at Allahabad and Silchar respectively; six Clinical Research Units, one each at Allahabad, Karimganj (Assam), Bhopal, Burhanpur, Bangalore and Meerut, a Unani Medical Centre at New Delhi, and a Chemical Research Unit at Aligarh.
The CRIUM, Hyderabad has been conducting clinical studies on Vitiligo, Hepatitis, Diabetes, Essential Hypertension etc. Over the years, this institute has emerged as speciality centre of Unani treatment for skin diseases particularly Vitiligo. Explains Dr. Munnawar Hussain Kazmi, the Head of the institute: “CRIUM, Hyderabad has acquired fame for the effective treatment it provides to patients suffering from skin disorders, especially that of Vitiligo. Patients from various parts of the country and abroad visit the institute for skin related ailments and get cured”
The Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Lucknow, in a similar fashion, focuses on research and development of treatment for musculoskeletal disorders. Their studies have established high therapeutic efficacy of Unani medicines for such diseases.
The Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Srinagar is engaged in preclinical safety studies of Unani medicines. It has succeeded in establishing preclinical safety of 22 Unani compound formulations. The monograph,“Pharmacological and Toxicological Studies on Unani Single and Compound Drugs” details the results of these studies, which have been published by the Council. The Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Chennai has undertaken major research in treatment of infective hepatitis and other chronic liver diseases.
Thus, by facilitating its peripheral centres to develop their own specialisations, CCRUM has succeeded in undertaking in-depth research into some of challenging disease conditions of the 21st century, and facilitated the growth of Unani system along modern lines
