According to the Ayurveda system, ‘Health’ is a state of a balanced proportion of Panchamahabhutas (the five great elements) and normal functioning of these elements with a pleased body, mind and soul. It is extremely important to maintain a state of equilibrium among the Dosh-Dhatu-Malas and Agni to enjoy a healthy body functioning.
When the equilibrium amongst these elements gets disturbed due to change in weather, disturbance in lifestyle, diet or any other factor, development of disease takes place. Apart from this, the cause of disease in Ayurveda is also seen as a disturbance amongst vata, pitta or kapha creating toxins in the body.
To create a perfect balance amongst all these elements, Ayurvedic measures are taken, which is called treatment. One of the most basic techniques involves taking the pulse, listening to the tone of the voice, observing the tongue, eyes and physical form during the treatment. In addition to this, seeing the progression of the disease, palliative and cleansing measures can be used to achieve balance along with the suggestions for eliminating or managing the causes of the imbalance. Apart from these, several other measures include implementation of lifestyle changes, maintenance of diet and usage of herbs.
On the whole, Ayurveda considers all the aspects of life — the body, mind, and spirit. It recognizes every human body differently and offers different measures to restore a healthy lifestyle.
